Gaining victory at Iin and other regions after
gathering at Nonsan on October 16, farmers' force marched up
to Gongju.
But Japanese and government force was already waiting for them
with all the forces deployed at important locations.
Farmers fought against the modern weapons that Japanese force
had in offensive or defensive battles about 40 to 50 times.
However the main force of the farmers was overwhelmingly defected.
The farmers defeated at Gongju fought bravely against the Japanese
force in other regions including Nonsan, Gumgu, Taein, and others
but they were defeated again.
More than 300,000 farmers were slaughtered in punitive expeditions
by the Japanese troops along the three southern regions.
Jeon BongJun and other leaders stopped by Sunchang to find a
basis to rise again, but they were arrested by the government,
which was informed by an informer Gim KyeongCheon.
They were transferred to Hanyang Jeon BongJun was executed on
March 30, 1895 along with Son WhaJung, Choe KyeongSeon, Gim
DeokMyeong, and Seong DuWhan. He was 41. |
