Choe JeU, founder of Donghak was executed at
the gallows in Daegu by the feudal government who claimed that
"he disrupted the world and spread a wrong theory that
deluded people.
And he also gathered people to start an uprising."
Donghak was totally banned and believers were cracked down.
And the public was exploited ever more. Despite the serious
crackdown, Donghak spread further down to the southern areas
of Joseon and it was so much so that people started to ask the
government to legally recognize Donghak.
And this is called "a movement of asking for a government
recognition of Donghak". |

Gatering
at Samrye |
| After the gathering at Gongju was disbanded without getting
a tangible result, thousands of people gathered at Samrye in
Jeollanam Province on November 3, 1892 and hold meetings for
over 10 days. And the people at the gathering voluntarily scattered
after a letter from the Jeolla-Do Governor, Lee KyeongJik, came
saying that "official recognition of Donghak is beyond
my authority but I will ban the exploitation of the local government
officials". |

Joint
appeal to the king and movement to dispel Japan and western
powers |
| Thousands of people voluntarily gathered at Jangnae-ri, Boeun,
Chungcheong-Do at early December 1892. Leaders of the northern
wing of Donghak suggested an appeal to the king by a small number
of representatives not by the large number of general farmers.
So on February 8, 1893, over 40 representatives gathered in
front of Gate Gwangwha and made appeal in a prostration position
to the king for three days straight in a row. To this, King
Gojong responded in a letter saying that "go back to your
home and do your daily business for life. Then I will do as
you wish." So the north wing stopped the joint appeal and
disbanded. Meanwhile, while the joint appeal was still going
on, farmers belonging to the south wing went up to Seoul (then
called Hanyang) to put posters calling for dispelling foreign
powers on the walls of foreign legation or churches. |

Meeting
at Boeun and Wonpyeong |
| On March 11, 1893, a throng after another gathered to Boeun,
Chungcheong-Do from Jeolla, Kyeongsang, Chungcheong, Kyeonggi,
Gangwon, etc. At the gathering of tens of thousands of people,
anti-foreign power slogan showed up as well. Dismayed by this,
the government tried to subdue them with Eoh YunJeong as the
head of government force. Eoh YunJeong met the leaders of north
wing such as Choe SiHyeong and Son ByeongHi on April 1, 1893
to deliver king's message for disbanding. Deeply impressed,
the north promised to scatter voluntarily. But this kind of
compromise angered the public farmers, and the leaders of the
north wing mentioned above left the gathering at night. While
the gathering at Boeun was withering, another gathering at Yonpyeong
led by Jeon BongJun went ahead in a passionate mood. But as
the Boeun gathering did not make a good progress, the plan to
march onward to Hanyang combining all the passion at Wonpyoung
and Boeun was scrapped. |
